work we do: Behind the scenes with Jess Ennis

About a month ago, the adidas team were granted access to the latest adidas campaign shoot for 2010 featuring Heptaphlon World Champion and rumoured favourite to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year (jinx) - JESS ENNIS. Seeing this as a great opportunity to gather press material the team got to work. Not content with securing exclusive interviews with leading women's fitness mag Zest and a TV spot with GMTV, they also arrived with the stylist of Grazia and a film crew to create a lifestyle behind the scenes film for further outreach around the coveted BBC SPOTY award (Sunday 13th December). Here's what they got:

work we do: So, what's happening with Sidra....

Amanda Sefton, Paul Teuton and Hannah Morris have been working flat out this winter to submit plans for Sidra – the cutting edge hospital due to open in Qatar in 2012. A rather suspicious Healthcare department have been informed that regular trips to Qatar, where the temperature in October reached a baking 45 degrees, have not been only fun in the sun. Having shared an apartment all together on the trips, the Sidra Team have become positively Walton-esque, and reports suggest Paul is quite the morning Barista.

The team has conducted a huge amount of research, looking in to what Sidra will offer to staff and patients as well as what Qatar is like as a place to live and work as an ex-pat. Based upon this, and those oh-so-challenging trips to Qatar, the team has developed a 3 year global PR plan (along with TBWA Raad in Dubai), which includes a myriad of exciting ideas, including a ‘Grand Designs’ style documentary following Sidra as it’s built – Kevin McCloud is currently TBC.
Amanda and Paul recently presented the plan in Qatar, from the perspective of our target audience (Paul was a doctor and Amanda a journalist). In method acting style, they were planning to dress the part, but chose not to in the end. The plan now has to be approved by the Executive Committee – which consists of most senior people in Qatar healthcare system. Fingers crossed that the plan will be signed off early in the new year. If all goes to plan, hopefully Hannah will not have to sleep on any sun-loungers again, having missed the apartment curfew…

Wall Street Journal’s Future of Finance summit

Richard Griffiths, Paddy Blewer and Avril Lee were wrestling with the world’s media this week as around 60 reporters descended on South Lodge in Sussex for the Wall Street Journal’s Future of Finance summit. Journalists from Sky News, the Daily Telegraph, The Times, City Am, Bloomberg and Reuters were among those who showed up in the hope of interviewing some of the most powerful people on the planet. George Soros, David Cameron, Alistair Darling and Barclays boss Bob Diamond were all there chewing the fat on(e) everything from bank bonuses to how to regulate the financial system. The trouble is not all these financial high-rollers wanted to talk and Richard and Paddy had to deal with the press scrum. Nonetheless, after much smoothing of journalists’ egos (and drinks in the bar), the event secured around 60 pieces of coverage including an item on the BBC 10 O’clock News after Richard carried the tape for the piece into Ketchum on his bike .. then the baton was handed over to intrepid intern Catherine Davison who hotfooted it to the Bank of England to deliver the tape to the BBC reporter! Thanks to Robyn M for reeling in this opportunity!

out and about: KP goes Yeah Yeah Yeah

On a cold winter's evening 4 and 2 ex Ketchumpleonites ventured to the Brixton Academy to enjoy what was to be an enthralling rip roaring performance from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, a regular Monday night this was not to be. From the off YYYs le ad, Karen O had the crowd captivated and in awe. Energetic, charasmatic and resembling a page from a Dazed fashion shoot on speed, Karen and the band performed song after song that the crowd could scream, yell, jump, dance and just lose themselves to. The YYYs rolled out all their hits throughout the night, but made sure to leave the show stopper until the very end, giving a heart stopping acoustic version of 'Maps' after the crowd were left crying out for 10mins to get their encore. Very rarely would the venue have witnessed the Brixton crowd go from rapturous cheering and excitement to an euphoric silence induced from the first chorus before breaking into one harmonious voice to take the song to its finally. The full house left the Academy blown away and knowing that they had just enjoyed something special; a performance only very few will ever match.

LC Xmas challenge

Last week, ex-marine Fernando and his digi team (we say team - but in reality, just Laura S) stepped up to kick off the LC Xmas challenge (blogged lower down) with their puny tree and borrowed baubles, throwing down the gauntlet to the rest of KP London. Well, the 3rd floor sounded its war drums and rallied with Claudia, Allison, Emma, Beth, Peter and Caroline banding together  to show off their Xmas cheer and are the latest pretenders to try and claim the KP London Xmas Challenge Throne! Here they are in all their Xmas cheer glory (click pics to enlarge), calling the rest of you out to take on the challenge. So get involved! The 1st floor east have been seen preparing their pink tree and those Xmas sweaters have been spotted around the building.

A trip to the movies...

In January 2010, Amanda M, who produces films in her spare time - and some of us say we can't find a spare moment to do our timesheets - will see her first production 'A PEACOCK FEATHERED BLUE' (trailer below) screened at KP London's local Richmix cinema (Bethnal Green Road). This short film about a 9yr old boy's challenge and struggles with self-belief to fulfil his dreams of inventing a new colour has already received high praise and even made the official selection to 5 indie film festivals.

So pen in your diaries 2PM SUNDAY 17TH JAN 2010, grab some popcorn, take your seat, switch off your mobiles and any video recording equipment (Although we've all enjoyed a pirate DVD where someone from the audience walks across the screen, it is illegal!) and enjoy this Amanda M production.

work we do: KODAK HOST 140 CHARACTERS CONFERENCE

Last Week Kodak hosted the 140 Characters conference at the O2 Indigo rooms at the O2 arena. The event was the European leg of a global conference on real time internet and the uses of twitter as a tool and the impact of both on the media, celebrity, society and politics. Stephen Fry was the main guest speaker and gave a 15 minute opening talk on his relationship with technology and twitter. The conference also hosted guest speakers from many different backgrounds including; the metropolitan police, musicians and producers, directors, education officials and bloggers from all across the blogosphere.
As part of the conference the Kodak team hosted their counterparts from across Europe, who, in turn brought with them bloggers and media from their respective countries. With very senior clients involved the weeks preceding the event were tense as the day had to run as smoothly as possible. The UK Kodak team were under pressure to deliver a large chunk of UK media which they achieved by having journalists from Sky news and the Telegraph as well as a number of technology bloggers and online journalists. Preceding the conference The Guardian covered the story as news. On the day #140conf was the second highest trending topic on twitter, with fantastic hits across key online media such as TechCrunch.
All the team worked extremely hard to ensure a fantastic day where product was seeded with over 70 key bloggers and further media were exposed to the relationship between Kodak and the social media influencers. The client was very happy with all the work and all the markets worked seamlessly together to produce great results for Ketchum and for Kodak.

work we do: NICE bit of coverage

Well done team Avastin (Amanda M, Vic Reason, Tinni, Hannah B with extra support from Julia Kendrick and Sarah Studd) for the great coverage generated for their latest campaign. In total Avastin scored not only a Daily Mail front page, but great broadcast (Channel 4 News and ITV News) and regional coverage too featuring cancer charities, patient case studies and clinicians talking about why Avastin should be available. We’re in the process of counting up the pieces as they are still coming in but here’s a quick snapshot…

work we do: PHILIPS TEAM GETS STEAMY

The Philips team pulled off the steamiest event Ketchum Pleon has ever seen yesterday at the GHI showcasing the Philips range of Steam Generator irons. Kate Hopper and Kim Power saw a great turnout from key media such as the editor of Good Housekeeping, House Beautiful and Which? to name but a few. The event was a great success and we had one very happy client who was delighted that everything ran so seamlessly and smoothly…. Ho ho… (click pics to enlarge)

Best of luck...

Last week saw the departure of Beth Harrold, 3.5yrs service, to pastures new and Danny Shine, on a 6 month sabatical to travel Oz and discover his inner Crocodile Dundee. Suitable leaving drinks were had at Luxe, messages of luck passed on and farewells said.

Chris Pickles comments, "It could be really tough for me to win the 'Duo of the Year Award' this Xmas without Danny. Damn! it would have been 3yrs in a row!"

restaurants: BARRAFINA, Frith Street, Soho

From Sam and Eddie Hart, owners of Fino, a restaurant critically acclaimed as "the best Spanish restaurant in England", Barrafina fill diners with high expectations. Bringing an environment that leaves you thinking you are in the heart of Spain, this buzzy tapas bar serves up some of the most authentic and finest Spainish delights utilising the freshest and best ingredients on offer. The FOOD MENU is paired with a tantilising wine list all at reasonable prices. Towards the end of service, the fresh daily seafood can also be purchased at reduced prices as at fish mongers, to help clear the iced filled seafood bar for next day's catch. This gem is definately one for the true foodie, or those seeking something different to the usual meat and two veg. However, be prepared to queue if you get there during rush hours - the food is good, prices affordable, atmosphere fun, so very popular!

and did you see this.....

and we get a little older.....HAPPY B'DAY AMY!

Saturday night and the rain delays, as we say aloha to the Hawaiian themed Mahiki club to celebrate Amy Holland's 23rd. Gathered together was an excited team of girls and guys, blondes and brunettes, and a cameo from Lizo 'Newsround' Mzimbo. From drinks served in treasure chests to pineapples, coconuts and the occasional shot glass - actually, it was prob harder to get a drink in a normal glass - the cheerful crowd took to the dancefloor where a certain young blonde's dancemoves left us thinking whether she had been locked in a room with nothing but MC Hammer on loop for the 20 odd years of her life, 'Can't touch this!' and so the night went on into the early hours and the night bus became a very welcome sight as a trek in the terrential rain left us seeking an inflatable dingy and some paddles. Until next year!

work we do: ALICIA ADDS MUSCLE

Alicia M jetted off to Frankfurt this week to attend the ‘Food Ingredients Europe’ Expo on behalf of third floor client Solae (a soy protein manufacturer). The Solae team (Suzanne S, Mayaz R, Claudia M and Valerie H) have been working tirelessly for the past month in planning a media brunch for the launch of a new product – SUPRO XF - an ingredient which can be applied in volume to high protein beverages without negatively impacting taste. Despite a few last minute panics, the media brunch went without a hitch and was attended by nine influential journalists representing the food / beverage media, with lots of interviews organised on site (and media coverage to follow). Highlight of the trip was Alicia’s encounter with none other than world strongman Derek Poundstone, who impressed the crowd with his frying pan bending exercise (I kid you not!)
